Ramrod 1506. 9 Spitfire IX LF with 90 gallon tanks took off from Ursel to escort rear of 120 Halifaxes bombing rail works shops at Recklinghausen. 1 Spitfire returned to base with technical trouble and remainder R/vd and to target as planned. Markers seen over target, but bombing unobserved owing to 6/10ths cloud, 10,000 ft. tops visibility above, 40 miles. Flak, small amount 80 mm from front line. Heavy fairly intense flak accurate for bombers from target area. N. of target a cluster of bursts of heavy flak on way out. Squadron landed back at Manston. |
