Ramrod 1306. 12 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) acted as escort to 24 Bostons bombing a target at Cleves. Blue 1 & 2 turned back ANtwerp area. Blue 1 oil trouble. Blue 3 & 4 returned to base early. Blue 3 faulty feed to overload tank. Bombers picked up near Eindhoven and covered at 14,000 - 15,000 ft. Black and red smoke seen in the target area. Left bombers at Antwerp. Slight heavy fairly accurate flak Flushing. Moderate heavy inaccurate flak target area. Weather 3/10 - 5/10ths. tops 12,000 ft., peaks 15,000 ft. Visibility good, cloud spreading westwards. Blue 1 & 2 landed at Brussels Evane and returned to base later. |
