12 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) escorted 100 Halifaxes bombing synthetic oil plant at Gelsenkirchen. Operation went according to plan. Large fires with black billowing smoke, white plumed, from target area. One bomber received a direct hit over target from flak which was intense and accurate for bombers. "Ferry Service" still operating Breskens to Flushing, the former town being ablaze. Weather - haze plus smoke South of line Knocke to Lembeck, no cloud, visibility fair. Clear to north with large patches flat topped cumulus, not thick, visibility good. |
