As Danish WW2 Pilots celebrates its twentieth anniversary, this is an opportunity to reflect on how the project began, how it has evolved, and why its original purpose remains unchanged.
A Small Website with an Ambitious Goal
When I uploaded the first version of Danish WW2 Pilots in August 2006, I simply wanted to make my research available to others.
Over the years I had collected information from archives, books, museums and private collections, but much of it was difficult for other researchers and relatives to access. Information was scattered, and many remarkable stories remained largely unknown.
The website became a way of bringing those fragments together into a freely accessible historical resource. Looking back, the project has developed far beyond what I originally imagined.
Hundreds of biographies have been researched and published. Thousands of archival records have been examined. Operational records, service files and personal accounts have continually expanded our understanding of the people behind the names.
The work has also led to books, lectures and collaborations with archives, museums, fellow historians and families both in Denmark and abroad.
History Is About People
Although the website contains aircraft, squadrons, operations and statistics, these have never been its true focus.
The purpose has always been to document the lives of the people themselves.
Every biography on the site represents an individual whose life was shaped by extraordinary events. Some never returned home. Others built new lives after the war. Together they form an important part of Danish history that deserves to be preserved and made accessible.
From the beginning, one simple idea has guided the project:
Knowledge that is not shared is eventually forgotten.
Sharing historical knowledge has therefore always been just as important as discovering it.
A Shared Project
Although Danish WW2 Pilots has been developed as an independent project, it would never have reached its twentieth anniversary without the help of many others.
Families have generously shared photographs and documents. Researchers have contributed information and corrections. Visitors have pointed out errors and helped identify new sources.
Every contribution, however small, has helped make the website more accurate and more complete.
Looking Ahead
Twenty years is an important milestone, but it is not the end of the journey.
Many biographies remain unwritten. New archival material continues to emerge, and there are still countless stories waiting to be discovered.
The mission remains exactly as it was in 2006: To preserve, document and share the history of Danes who served in military aviation during the Second World War.
