Kaj Kærgaard Johansen is born on 18 August 1918 in Støring, Denmark. He is signed on one of the very last ships to leave Denmark before the German occupation the 9 April 1940; the Danish East Asia Company's M/S Kina. On-board this ship is also later pilot Kjeld Rønhof

He volunteers for the Royal Norwegian Air Forces in camp "Little Norway" in Canada and is trained as flight mechanic (644). He is in service from 21 February to 13 July 1941. He holds the rank of Vingsersjant Flight Sergeant.
